The Tear of Ioun

Welcome to Wellspring
The Adventure has begun

SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED THROUGH TOUCH OF MADNESS FROM WOTC

After the PC’s regain consciousness after the portal exploded, they find themselves lying in a large field next to a road leading up to a town in the distance.

After Asteron had to pull Tobias from the cold river that was identified as The Chill, the party was able to survey the area more closely. Jim was able to recall from his readings on history that the town was known as Wellspring, while Keno was able to identify that the forest beyond the town was known as Harrow Wood, home of the half-orcs commonly referred to as Harrowfolk.

Once the party reached the town gates and after a quick wink from Jim, the guards let the group into the town and directed them to The Blue Plate where they could take a room for the night. On the way they found the large building known as the Mindspire, the great temple dedicated to Ioun.

Jim was intrigued by the goddess of knowledge and gave an offering to the plate presented by one of the priests. Tobias, however, saw this as an opportunity for some gain. Distracting the guard by pretending to give an offering too, he tried to snatch up more money than he placed in the plate. A nearby pilgrim noticed, however, and the guards were quickly summoned. Disgusted by his partner’s actions, Jim loosed a icy ray at Tobias freezing him in place for the guards to haul him to the cells nearby.

With Tobias locked away, the party was able to find a room at the Blue Plate and began to settle down for the night. A scream of terror outside unfortunately told them otherwise. Several large flying creatures with tentacles were attacking the group gathered outside who were visiting the large statue of Estred in the middle of the square.

The party set out to stop these creatures as their tentacles grabbed at the nearest townsfolk to them. Kaykei~ could hear them screaming out in Deep Speech something about a “Tear” they were looking for. Luckily one of the creatures damaged the building that was holding Tobias and he was able to escape his cell and join the battle once he gathered his belongings from a lockbox nearby.

As the last of the Grell fell, a priestess named Deirdre emerged from the temple to help heal the fallen. Jim, who was struck by her beauty went to help her and struck up a conversation. She soon enlisted the party to find this Tear of Ioun and return it to the temple before whoever sent these creatures could find it. She gave the party access to her rituals as well as information needed to find the Kaorti Temple that stands in the Kadagast Mountains northwest of the town.

And so the party set off within the next couple days after gathering supplies for the journey. They followed The Chill west into Harrow Wood where they were soon spotted by the Harrowfolk from afar, as well as another group.

The Eyes of Malachi led by Eskade found the party traveling through the wood and set her band against them. The group was easily dispatched but several nasty spells flew out from the warlock who hung in back avoiding the massacre of her melee focused allies. Soon, Eskade met the same fate however, and lay dead at the feet of the party. Keno found Eskade’s Feytouched Drowmesh +3 very useful and upgraded her armor.

After recovering from the attack a new group emerged from the wood approaching the party. It was Vaymeer and several of Harrowfolk. They came with their weapon sheathed and hands up in a gesture of peace. After conversing with the party about their goal to find the Tear of Ioun at the Kaorti Temple he agreed to lead them within sight of the temple the Harrowfolk referred to as The Forlorn Tower.

With the help of Vaymeer and the rest of the Harrowfolk the party was able to reach the tower without any more complications, however, as they reached the foot of the tower they soon learned that their break from battle was at an end. Several ghoulish figures crouched over many dead corpses outside the tower. They had noticed the party approaching, and were eager for a fresh meal…

Outside the Tower

The party reached the foot of the tower, the surrounding area littered with bodies of the dead. Several ghouls feasting on the dead see the group moving up and charge at them attacking. As the fight commenced many of the bodies lying on the ground began to stir. Several zombie rise up to join the fight. Kaykei~ moves in and lets loose a blast of radiant light killing the first of the undead who came against the party. Asteron charged in soon finding himself surrounded by zombies and one of them managed to grab hold of him. Jim fired off a few spells toasting the zombies that were grabbing hold of Asteron. Tobias gets hurt but is soon saved by a strong healing strike from Kaykei~ who finished off the ghouls saving Tobias.

With the dead laid back to rest the party decided it would be best that they find shelter for the night before venturing forth into the tower. A nearby cave proved it would be a good spot to rest, however, upon closer inspection it seemed the cave was already occupied. A small cruel looking creature peered out of the entrance watching the party approaching. Kaykei~ moved forward attempting to negotiate with the creatures in deep speech, but it seemed they were not interested in sharing the cave and moved out to attack. Several more of the smaller creatures wielding bone daggers ambushed the back of the party attacking Jim from the shadows. Several larger of the creatures moved out one of them loosing magic from a powerful wand. The party was easily able to chase them back into the cave and dispose of the previous inhabitants claiming the cave as their own. Inside they found a chest with a large amount of gold as well as a Flame Wand +3 that the foulspawn seer was carrying.

With the cave secured the group was able to set up a safe camp and rest for the night.

After resting and preparing their spells the group moved to the tower entrance and opened the door to the first room. Inside was small entrance room covered in a vile substance all over the floors and walls. In one corner was a large flesh golem sitting idly. Moving into the room a large swarm of stirges flew down attacking the party. Jim was able to shoot off a large blast of fire damaging killing many of the stirges in the swarm but also angering the golem in the corner. The Golem jumped to life attacking the group. Asteron quickly charged in knocking the golem to the ground while Keno moved around flanking and killing it off. While the party was distracted by the fight with the golem a dwarf snuck down the hallway and began to throw shuriken at the group. The maniacal dwarf spun around the group pulling out his sword trying to cut them down. Kaykei~ attempted to reason with the dwarf, but like the foulspawn outside, he seemed to laugh at the prospect and simply told them that the might of Elomir and the Stormcrows will destroy them. Despite his threats however, he was no match for the group and fell down dead just like the golem. Tobias looted the sword the dwarf was wielding which Jim discovered was a Bloodiron Shortsword +3.

Moving to explore the rest of the tower the group came upon a room with a large chasm in the floor. Jim moved up to inspect the chasm and decided to urinate into the chasm in order to “measure” how deep it was. A bit grossed out Keno chose to investigate the rest of the room and found that there were several Gricks taking residence in the room beyond, and in the chasm now covered with urine from Jim was a foul creature with a large snarling mouth and oozing skin clinging to the wall just inside the chasm. The angered creature moved up to attack Jim while the rest of the party moved in to attack the gricks. Kaykei~ unfortunately got lost in the twisting hallways of the tower and joined the battle a bit late. After finishing off the foul creature in the chasm and the small gricks a larger grick alpha moved forward to attack those who just slaughtered its family. Asteron was able to knock it to the ground and Keno and Jim quickly put it out of its misery before it was able to strike back.

The rest of the floor was fairly barren except for one room that was filled with sleeping grimlocks. Kaykei~ also heard a woman in a room nearby that seemed to be fairly distracted arguing with someone. Before the grimlocks could wake Jim decided to send his dragonling companion into the room to explode a fire blast in the room hoping to kill off the sleeping grimlocks. Half of them dead, the other half slightly burned they rose to charge the intruding wizard. The woman nearby heard the racket and also moved into action just as Keno burst in to attack. Similarly possessed like the dwarf the woman was covered in a gross slime. Jim hung back with the grimlocks as the rest of the party rushed in to engage the female who seemed to be slipping around Keno avoiding being flanked while slashing at her and another grimlock wielding a large axe helped to guard her. Asteron charged the guard knocking him down and with the help of Tobias finished him quickly just as Keno and Kaykei~ were able to kill the woman who fell cursing the party for damning her to death. The group rushed back to the room where they left Jim with several angry grimlocks only to find him calmly striding from the room unscathed and all the grimlocks lying on the floor burnt to a crisp. He pointed out the magical shield the female was using and handed it to Asteron telling him it was a Shield of Blocking.

Moving upstairs the group walked into a section of the tower where the rushing waterfall was eroding the stones slowly over time. Keno soon noticed two large destrachan’s lurking in the corners of the room. Jim moved around and used his Ghost Sound to mimic their movements near the waterfall. The destrachan’s leaped out at the noise shooting their sound pulses at the distraction. Now out of their hiding spots the party charged in and was easily able to dispatch both of them without too much trouble.

Exploring the rest of the floor Jim stumbled upon a large red beholder floating in the corner of one of the rooms. A little eager Tobias ran in firing crossbow bolts at the beholder trying to surprise it with a quick attack. The beholder responded harshly turning on Tobias and shooting off firey rays at the rogue. Keno activated her armor, cloaking her in invisibility to sneak around the beholder to flank it while Asteron and the rest of the group rushed in to aid Tobias. Soon into the battle another of the possessed and twisted members of the Stormcrows barged into the room. The eladrin female brought up a large wall of flames that engulfed Jim and Tobias and cut off any room for escape. The flames bit at Tobias badly and he fell to the ground, overwhelmed by the burns. Kaykei~ rushed to his aid, healing him and pulling him from the flame wall so he could rejoin the fight. Keno and Asteron continued to fend off the beholder while Jim gets pushed away by a telekinetic ray and is trapped outside of the flame wall. While he rushed to find a way to rejoin the battle, Keno makes a killing blow on the beholder, dropping it to the floor. The group moved in to surround the eladrin just as she teleported out of danger and loosed a flame burst at the party, dropping the battered Tobias once again. Kaykei~ quickly heals Tobias once again and he is able to leap back up tumbling around the female wizard and with a flurry of hacks and slashes with his concealed sword he drops her to the ground. Reaching up from the puddle of blood forming around her body, she cries out to someone she called Elomir, apologizing for her failure…

Jim found the robes of the eladrin to be very useful finding them to be Robes of Contingency +3. Fairly battered from battling the tower’s defenses the party moved back outside to set up camp back in the cave.

Teleportation and Crazed, Bloodstained Humans

After resting outside the tower at their camp set up in the cave just outside, the party set off to explore the rest of the tower. There was still a closed off area on the second floor that was left unexplored. Asteron moved forward to open the last door of the area and before him stood a humanoid with blood stained clothes hunched over a dead corpse of a grimlock. Laughing maniacally at the group who just entered his domain, he yelled “FRESH MEAT!!!” and drew out his swords.

Kaykei quickly ran into the room and exploded in a solar blast awakening a large beast in the corner of the room. It roared in anger and dropped from the ceiling. As the party turned to face it, it seemed to phase from existence, then appeared right next to Kaykei. It’s tentacles shot out in all direction whipping at everyone within its reach, causing some of the party members to shift around from the sheer force of the large tentacles crashing into them. Then just as quickly as it appeared, the beast vanished.

Thinking the beast to have run off, the part refocused on the crazed, blood stained human whirling his swords with efficiency trying to cut down the group that had quickly surrounded him. Kaykei had moved towards the back having taken some damage from rushing in and angering the large beast just as it reappeared right in front of her. It’s tentacles swung out again reaching for anyone it could, then again disappeared.

Jim was tired of the beast phasing in and out of view and drew out his wand as he sat in the back of the group waiting. The rest of the group had the crazed human cornered with no where to go. He was no match for them all and soon fell, his swords clattering to the ground as he slumped down dead onto the bloodstained floor. The beast reappeared just then about to attack again, but Jim was ready. He pointed his wand and icy rays shot forth towards the beast. They whizzed past the beast and crashed into the wall behind it leaving a large patch of frost covering the stones. Cursing, Jim barely ducked out of the way as the creature whipped his tentacles around the room.

The rest of the party was ready to focus its attention on the beast now. They turned around to face it as it disappeared once again. They rushed towards where it was last standing and attacked the air in front of them. Keno’s sword made contact. The beast lurched in pain as its invisibility dropped and it returned to view. Now the group had something to hit. With the beast in view and all five of them working together the beast fell to the floor its tentacles limp and no longer flailing around the room. As the life drained from its body it seemed to phase out of existence once again, but this time, it didn’t come back.

Jim rushed over to the dead body eager to find any magical items. Sure enough the blood stained cloak the human was wearing seemed to shimmer. As Jim reached for the cloak it seemed to move and distort his vision. Finally, he got his hands on it, a Cloak of Distortion +3.

The Third Floor

After besting the teleporting beast the party was able to move up to the third floor. It was a large room taking up the entire floor of the tower. Two set of armor glowing red from within stood on either side of the room. The armor seemed to have noticed the party but made no move towards them. Keno looked around the room trying to see why the armor was not attack and she noticed that there was something else in the room with them. In each corner of the room stood a large pillar, behind three of those pillars was more of the flying creatures that attacked Wellspring. Keno knew the grell would not hesitate to attack like the armor and so she activated her armor and turned invisible.

Asteron didn’t wait for the armor to make its decision about fighting, he charged straight in to the closest monster knocking it down and continuing to beat it with his flail. Tobias followed Asteron’s lead and charged towards the other armor trying to take it down by himself. Then the grell’s moved out from hiding. One joining each of the battles with the armors trying to grab at each of the adventurers. The third grell moved in towards Jim who was hanging back at the stairs with Kaykei firing magic from afar.

Asteron was soon joined by Keno who was moving with her invisiblity to flank the creatures while her cat Deimos hung back to help out Jim and Kaykei. Tobias was left alone with two creatures fighting for his life. Kaykei let out as many healing prayers to Jim and Tobias who seemed overwhelmed by the grell beating them with their tentacles when one more joined the fight.

Flying down from one of the large holes in the ceiling another larger grell swooped over firing large blasts of psychic energy. These blasts fell right on Kaykei and Jim and Jim fell down unconscious. Tobias quickly finished off the creatures battling him but with more than a few cuts and bruises and rushed to fight the new comer who was blasting bolts of energy at Kaykei. Tobias sprinted along the edge of the hole in the floor the grell was floating over and ran straight up one of the large pillars. About five feet up the pillar he pushed off sailing through the air, both swords poised for a strike at the large floating brain. It saw him coming. Listing lazily to the left, it out maneuvered the flying rogue and Tobias found himself diving head first into the room below.

With only the large grell philosopher left, the rest of the group focused its attention on him. Asteron sprinted straight towards the philosopher and without and fancy wall (or pillar) running he leaped off from the edge of the hole. His flail crashed down on top of the grell, its tentacles wrapping around the minotaur as both of them plummeted down the full twenty feet to the floor below. Tobias was able to make his way upstairs just as the grell fell and he decided his crossbow would be better than leaping down there again and began to fire. Keno pulled out her bow and shot arrow after arrow down the hole at the grell who was now battling the crazed minotaur who dropped them down the hole. With Asteron holding the grell where it was and the rest of the party raining death down the hole on top of the grell it soon met the same fate as the others, laying dead on the floor.
